Functionality and good looks

The rejuvenation of the kitchen and bathroom in a heritage apartment in Darlinghurst required a delicate balance, combining contemporary glamour with respect for the existing art deco features.

In keeping with the client’s refined fashion sensibility, a chic and innovative design was devised that combines functionality and good looks.

A formerly utilitarian space, the galley kitchen has been transformed into an entertainer’s delight with a new layout that allows for maximum storage and includes an eat-in component which was high on the client’s wish list.

The four-metre-high ceilings help to provide the illusion of spaciousness and presented the chance to build up the cabinetry. The expanded Corian-topped bench space offers a generous preparation area and overlooks a spectacular view of the city, while the seating nook with its upholstered banquette beckons for morning coffee or evening cocktails.

The palette of soft pinks and charcoal speaks to the owner’s love of colour and is feminine yet strong, with warm burgundy notes in the Rosso Levanto marble wall tiles enhanced by glowing gold accents in the fluted cabinetry handles, tapware and opulent sink. The final flourish is a Greg Natale ‘Rinna’ floor rug in harmonising shades that anchors the scheme.

For the owners the remodelled space is one of their favourite rooms, and they appreciate the beautiful light that floods in through the windows and the new design elements that perfectly complement the rest of the 1913 property.

In the bathroom a decorative step motif has been introduced to convey a feeling of spaciousness and offer a nod to the art deco heritage of the building. Repeated in the shower and vanity the step design provides interest and originality as well as the more practical effect of concealing plumbing. A pivoting mirror benefits from its position near the window affording natural light for makeup application. Colour plays an important role here too with the cabinetry in a warm pink, Dulux ‘Ellen Half’, helping to underscore the inherent femininity of the space and the black terrazzo ledge tiles and penny round mosaic floor tiles providing bold punctuation points.

An eclectic style imbues the apartment, with pops of yellow and teal and the owner’s interesting collections catching the eye at every turn. The revamped kitchen and bathroom now echo this mood, complementing the colours and elegance of the property.
